City of Powell

History

Powell was incorporated in 1909. Powell was named for John Wesley Powell, U.S. soldier, geologist and explorer. Powell post office was established January 23, 1908.  Originally Locate on top the Polecat bench Powell was later relocated to it's current location for alcoholic reasons.  Originally Garland located 5 miles east of Powell was meant to be the main community but due a law that alcohol couldn't be consumed within 5 miles of a railroad camp Powell came to exist at its current location

Today

Beautiful City of Powell is located in the Northwest Region of Wyoming.  We are Tree city with plenty of parks and the whole town is extremely walkable.  Located close to many outdoor sports activities such as hunting, fishing, mountain biking, 4x4 off road adventures, hiking, boating, camping.  Only 70 miles to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park makes a day trip to one of the nations true treasures extremely easy.   Powell is home to Northwest College a community college with a large campus with 1880 enrolled students.
